Coping with Sensory Overload

By Amitabh Swetta
In Today’s urban day we are being bombarded with unprecedented amount of information. Check this out…

We wake up, immediately pick up our phone, check our social media feed (information) on our smartphones, go for a shower, come out read our newspapers (information) and have our breakfast, get out for work, turn our car on and start the radio (information), roads are filled with Hoardings and signage (information), work and gather information from Google in that process, you head back from work in car Radio, signage and hoardings plus phone feed… come home watch Television (information), read or listen to something (information). Moreover the smells, sounds, touches are feeding in a whole lot of data input continuously into the central nervous system.

What is this Sensory overload doing to us?

The brain of a mature adult really cannot over absorb things. At some points it experiences fatigue. Wherever the excesses occur, there is always signal… call it lack of concentration and-or headache, stress, anxiety, whatever, it always comes.

Imagine this, turn on 25 applications on your phone. After a few minutes your phone will slow down and after a bit more time it might hang. What would you do in such a response from your phone? You would go ahead and reset you phone. This is the same response you get in your brain (Bio computer) when you are flooded with information for a long period of time.

Wouldn’t you like a reset sometimes?A true R.E.S.T.? If you are still with me … Welcome to the world of Floating.

What is a Float Therapy?

A float Therapy is known by many acronyms. I.e. Float, floatation therapy, R.E.S.T. (Restrictive environmental stimulus therapy), Sensory Deprivation Tank

It’s a Pod/ room/ tank filled with about 2000 liters of water and about 750 Kg’s of Epsom salt is added to the mix.

Lie down inside and firstly you escape gravity….

A mixture of 35% Epsom salt in water, releases you from the bondage of the gravitational force and you become buoyant… effortlessly.

Imagine a space where gravity does not exist, your muscles relax totally, your bones and ligaments start to relax, your neuro-chemical and bio-chemical feedback gets a free flow, Your Central nervous system now starts firing perfectly, opening up the Para sympathetic nerves, calming you down, Opening up new neural pathways for you to utilize while making you sharper and clearer in your thought process, you can now let that tense neck relax and let go off all the tensions we carry on our spine bringing it to its natural state.

Now, the first sensory input and the largest one by far… The Eyes. Our eyes accumulate about 50% of the information that is around us. Everything that we see is computed inside our bio computer (the brain) 50 % of it is through our eyes.

In total darkness of the float therapy you shut out 50% information of the brain to start giving it a true R.E.S.T.

A meditator relates to this always by shutting the eyes to the outside world Or Indian and Buddhist sages do their meditations in dark caves for this specific reason.

When you shut the lights out whenever you feel comfy and if you don’t feel comfortable then keep the lights on and just shut your eyes through the session. There is always another session to shut the lights out and experience new boundaries of tranquility.

So most of the float centers provide you with disposable earplugs so that you immerse your ears safely in water and let go off that sensory input which is a switched on mode 24X7. Try to understand that these amazing ears are tuned in to absorb information even if you are sleeping. Once you let your self immerse in the water, the auditory input now is reduced and you start relaxing even further listening to your heart beating and the sound of your breath.

And the thoughts come and go… as you understand not to hold on to them and let them come or go, or focus and hold a specific thought to get answers from the innermost depths of unimaginable and amazing bio computer of yours.

The warm liquid is heated exactly to our body temperature and you now cannot distinguish where the body ends and where the water begins… you start dissolving…. Little by little you disappear… resting in an unimaginable space and time bubble.

The music comes on at the end of the desired session… as we turn the lights on…

And we lie in a warm fuzzy feeling from inside.

The world around us starts to come back, and now we are being reborn as if we were floating in a mothers’ womb. Get out and you are welcomed by gravity. And you head for the shower. You look at yourself and there is a certain glow from the inside…. And you understand the amazing capabilities of the float…

Its always advisable to sit in silence after you float for about 10 min. so that you can express and absorb to yourself about how amazing this session was ….
